Women’s position in the European Union

Author: Danuta Hübner

In Poland and in Europe the position of women is the subject of numerous discussions and debates, both among women themselves and in broader public discourse. It may be useful, however, to undertake a small thought experiment. Would it be possible to imagine that the same amount of time and learned argument is devoted to the subject of “the position of men in the European Union” or anywhere else? I think everyone would consider this proposition funny.

The eyes of her child are just not enough - childhood, parenthood and work

Author: Agnieszka Graff

“The Eyes of Her Child” – such was the title of a sketch performed at one of the earliest manifas (Warsaw annual 8th of March demonstrations), composed entirely of quotes from articles about women’s role published in the conservative press. The message was simple: a true woman is a mother, motherhood equals womanhood. This was sung in dignified monotone, while a group of romantically dressed-up girls danced around slowly, burdened by a gigantic rosary. I do not recall the exact words (sadly, the recording is lost), but I do remember the main motif: all that a mother needs is to look into the eyes of her child the eyes of her child the eyes of her child... A true woman has no aspirations, no need for a career, and even no need for money. All she needs is to look into the eyes of her child – her image reflected in them, her life’s meaning coming from them. Everything else will somehow work itself out.

How to effectively fight unemployment and increase job placement among women?

Author:Anna Karaszewska

Welfare to work reforms – from a beneficiary of welfare benefits to an active participant in the job market. The rate of employment in Poland of the age group 18-59/64 is estimated at 59%, while the average in the entire European Union is over 70%. Women dominate every group of the unemployed: the young, the group of over 50 years of age, or the long-term unemployed. Despite being better educated, women remain unemployed longer than men, often without the right to welfare benefits. At the end of 2009, every sixth woman and every tenth man remained unemployed for 24 months from the moment of registration.
